This gorge can be visited from the Maryland side of the Potomac River near Washington DC.  The cliffs on the far side of the painting are actually on the Virginia side of the Potomac.  The casual tourist to Maryland gets a surprise benefit of feeling as if they are visiting Canada when overlooking this scene.
